What decides the price of Ponni rice

  • Ageing: rice stored for months, or a year, after harvest costs more to hold, and cooks fluffier and more separate.
  • Variety and grade: the paddy variety, the grain, and how closely the rice is graded and colour sorted.
  • Pack size: larger packs usually cost less per kilo.
  • Paddy prices, which change from one harvest season to the next.

Which pack size gives the best value

Larger packs usually work out cheaper per kilo, so compare the 5, 10 and 26 kg prices of the same pack. A 26 kg bag suits a family that eats rice twice a day; 5 or 10 kg suits a smaller household, or trying a new variety first.
